Featured Research: Powerline Sag Measurement using GPS

A set of tests at OakRidge National Laboratory, gives a glimpse into the measurement of powerline sag via GPS technology. When an excess of current is passed through a section of powerline it thermally expands and can sag 16 feet or more. Since powerlines typically have unobstructed views of global positioning satelites, the technology provides a means of measurement without positioning any instrumentation on the ground.
